Makita LS0714 Quad 10 Amp 7-1/2-Inch Sliding Compound Miter Saw Review

When the time comes to work on carpentry projects – whether it’s at your job, or those around the house projects – it’s essential to have a quality miter saw. The Makita LS0714 Quad 10 Amp 7-1/2-Inch Sliding Compound Miter Saw is one model that any carpenter would be proud to have in the shop or on the job site. With a powerful 10 amp motor and steel poles for stable, accurate cutting, it’s easy to understand why so many people consider the Makita LS0714 Quad 10 Amp 7-1/2-Inch Sliding Compound Miter Saw the best portable miter saw on the market today.

Accurate, Precise Cutting

Let’s face it, a miter saw is only as good as it is precise. That’s what makes the Makita LS0714 Quad 10 Amp 7-1/2-Inch Sliding Compound Miter Saw such a hit with people who know their tools. This miter saw, even though it is designed to be a portable, job-site saw, is every bit as precise as most larger, shop models from the most respected tool manufacturers. And not only can you dial in to the precise angles that you need, you can also count on a clean cut every time. This saw doesn’t tear up hardwoods, or blow out the back of precision cuts, like many portable miter saws are notorious for doing. Every cut is clean, smooth and ultra-precise.

Power tool safety in general is a matter of habit. You won’t always be thinking about safety with your head full of the details of your current project, so if you get in the habit of always practicing safety those habits should take over even when your mind is elsewhere. Accidents are by definition “unintended,” and good safety habits are just a way of putting the odds on your side when the unintended comes your way. Being safe around a miter saw is mostly common sense and fairly simple – you just have to actually do it to get the benefit.

The saw comes with Laser line as standard and is factory adjusted so that it is positioned within 1 mm (0.04”) from the side surface of the blade (cutting position). But if you require to set to the Laser line different it can be shifted to either the left or right side of the saw blade by adjusting the adjusting screw

This saw is so quite it’s amazing. The stock blade actually peforms really well. I was surprised how good it cut. Orginally I was looking at the Bosch and DeWalt miter saws. I was pretty much dead set on buying one of those until I got a few recommendations and read some reviews on the Makita. It slides extremely smooth when cutting and switching to another angle stop. Having used a Delta and an Old B&D 10” this is a ROLLS ROYCE compared to them.

IMO, it’s only real weakness is the low fence. I corrected that by attaching boards to the fence.Much needed if you a cutting cornice and the likes.

Some users who said that “blades are hard to find” probably don’t realize that the depth of cut can be adjusted very easily by a little screw above the blade guard. This means you can use 7 1/4 blades, which as we all know are readily available due to their use in circular saws and worm drives.

While this mitre saw come’s with excellent blades, others may not be so good. The best rule of thumb is good blade on a poor saw will make better, cleaner cuts than a cheap blade on the most expensive saw, so it makes sense to buy the best blade you can afford. It’s also cheaper in the long run as you will find a blade will last a lifetime.

Keep your fingers away from the blade when setting up a cut. Six inches is a good minimum distance, and some saws have marks to identify a “danger zone.” There is no reason to get closer. If the piece you’re cutting is small, it should be cut from a longer piece, or clamped so your fingers are well out of the way during the cut. Clamps are an excellent way to positively secure your workpiece, whereas holding the work against the fence by hand may allow it to slip, causing the blade to bind with unintended consequences.

How about power?

Since we’ve already established that the Makita LS0714 Quad 10 Amp 7-1/2-Inch Sliding Compound Miter Saw is a precision miter saw, let’s talk about power. This Makita miter saw is powered by a tough, little 10 amp motor. And while that may not be the biggest saw motor on the block, it gets the blade moving at a whopping 6,000 RPM. And that speed contributes to the smooth cutting action we talked about earlier. At that speed, this saw has no problems slicing through the hardest pieces of lumber with ease.
