Let’s take a look at theFestool 574432 Domino Joiner DF 500 Q Set
The biggest difference with this model is the size of mortice you are able to cut, 15-70 mm in 5 mm increments (19/32″ to 2-3/4″). The set includes the Domino XL, 12mm cutter, an assortment of 12mm tenons, trim stop and cross stop.
The cross stop and trim stop cross-compatable, the trim stop and hand rail fence will work fine between the two machines. The cross stop has been recently modified (now product number 498590) to work with both machines and is reversible, one side for the DF 500 and one side for the XL.
The 700 also comes with the two systainer accessories one with 8mm & 10mm and another with 12mm & 14mm plus extra bits.
Festool 498204 XL 8/10mm Domino Tenon Assortment
What size timber can you expect to use the 700 on well with the 500 you can use on ½ inch thick material such as making draw joints and aligning panels, with the 700 the smallest thickness timber you would be using it on ¾ timber. Though this can only be done using the smallest domino cutter for the 700 though even using this you will not be left with a lot of shoulder for glueing but the up side is you are cutting far deeper into the timber so have far more of the domino going into the joint.
The 700 model is perfect when looking to scale up the size of the projects you are working on, you can make your large doors and casings with ease where before you would have to have cut the mortices on a dedicated mortice machine and the tenons on your table saw and cross cut saw which was very time consuming to say the least.
What types of timber will the Festool 700 cut
Well the good news is that it cuts hard woods and red wood perfectly,Ok you have to take it more slowly when your cutting the likes of exotics like Ipe, Cocobolo, Rosewood, etc?, but you have to remember these are very dense and hard pieces of timber.
Conclusion
The new bigger Festool 574432 Domino Joiner DF 500 Q Set plunges deeper and uses larger bits, so if you’re making joints in bigger material, the bigger domino makes sense.
For home? What do you make at home? … chairs, cabinetry, etc – yes the DF500 is ideal. If you like making large doors at home, you probably want the 700!
Stationary machines like hollow chisel mortises and slot mortises occupy large amount of floor space in your shop, are expensive to purchase, require a lot of setup and maintenance, and force you to bring the material to the tool. Festool has taken the revolutionary concept of the Domino joiner and made it larger, the Domino XL Joiner.
The Domino XL offers a more elegant solution to the challenge of large scale joinery. Amazingly simple to use, fast and accurate. The Domino XL now complements the capabilities of the original Domino DF 500, with a maximum tenon size of about five and a half -Inch in length (140 mm). No job is too big for the Domino XL. With an expanded range of thicker, longer tenons, you will quickly and precisely join massive slabs, doors and gates, or construct the most durable of tables and beds.
With the Domino XL, you’ve got a system light enough and nimble enough for use anywhere in the shop or the jobsite. When the work piece is too large to come to the machine, this makes all the difference. Precision placement of solid hardwood tenons guarantees not only a perfect fit, but a finished product that will last for generations Set version includes trim and cross stop accessories.
The new Festool Domino XL DF 700 Joiner is here. Think of the classic Festool Domino Joining machine, but supersized (kind of like “Honey I Blew Up the Kids”). Thanks to Festool it is now easier and quicker to produce precision, robust wooden joints. Think a benchtop mortising machine that’s easier to control than most all handheld power tools.
The Domino XL DF 700 comes to the workpiece with you. Not the other way around. Supremely stable, even more so than it’s predecessor, the DF 500 Domino, the new Domino XL is sure to be almost twice as efficient than traditional benchtop and stationary machines. That’s 50% more time during the day to accomplish more and do what you want. The Domino XL is perfect for door as well as furniture construction while also excelling in the creation of solid wood joints.

Not meant to replace the original , but rather to complement, the new DF 700 is not a furniture wizard like it’s little brother. It excels where structural strength is needed. Designed for intuitive, efficient use on a wide range of projects. For example, it accomodates different sized joints for different sized projects.
There are four tenon sizes (8,10,12,14mm). 8mm is just the right size for cabinet face frames, while the massive 14mm tenon provides long lasting support for bigger scale projects like doors and tables. Switching between tenon sizes is literally as simple as screwing a different sized cutter into the machine, taking only seconds and a push of a button. Spring loaded steel locating pins in the front face can be popped in or out, one at a time, allowing the user to place the precise mortises a set distance from the end of the stock, or even registered from a previous mortise. This simplicity helps eliminate mistakes associated with measuring, marking, or even just trying to move the tool into position.
For edge joining operations, like large panels, there’s an adjustment for the mortise width that lets you create a loose fit for more maneuverability during assembly. For complex joinery that requires angled tenons, the XL adjusts from zero to ninety degrees with positive stops at zero, 22.5, 45 and 90 degrees. Thick stock is no challenge at all with an adjustable fence that allows changes from 10mm to 50mm (13/32″ to 1-31/32″). Place offset or perfectly centered tenons with ease. Height adjustment is as simple as releasing a lever, sliding the fence up or down through a series of presets and then relocking the lever.
There’s a lot to be said for superior, system oriented engineering, an opinion shared by British woodworker Peter Parfitt who has been using the XL fora few months now. His analysis: “This is one of the most brilliant, well engineered, rugged, safe to use, and joyful machines that I have ever had in my hands.”
